18th-century-style Leather Box For Letters Or Papers, 20th Century
Fauve leather desk letter tray, crafted in the style of 18th-century leather goods; made in the mid-20th century.
With a dynamic shape, featuring a slightly domed front and a sloping lid, it is entirely covered in patinated leather and adorned with rich gold filigree decoration, consisting of scrollwork and foliage motifs. Darker stamped ornaments complement the decoration at the corners and on the front.
The box features a movable patinated metal handle on top and a hasp closure on the front, with a keyhole. Opening the box reveals a compartmentalized interior designed for storing mail and documents, fully lined with brown moiré fabric and featuring several dividers.
The flared base features the same leather covering and gold piping, giving the piece the appearance of a small travel case or an antique toiletry set.
A beautiful decorative desk piece, particularly appealing for its warm patina, its design inspired by antique leather goods, and its architecturally shaped form.
