Small Snuff Box Or Pill Box Made Of Solid Silver, With A Floral Design In The Louis XVI Style – 19th Century
A charming little rectangular box made of solid silver, finely decorated with floral motifs and garlands; a French piece from the late 19th century, in the Louis XVI style.
The hinged lid features an elegant relief design consisting of a central vase of flowers, surrounded by leafy scrolls and symmetrically arranged garlands of flowers. The design is framed by geometric friezes that highlight the contours of the lid.
The four sides are also richly adorned with laurel wreaths held in place by knotted ribbons, alternating with delicate friezes of small flowers and foliage.
The contrast between the finely textured backgrounds and the raised motifs particularly highlights the quality of the silversmithing.
The interior, which has no compartments, shows traces of old gilding beneath the lid.
This charming little box could have been used as a snuff box, pill box, or pocket box for storing small precious objects.
Solid silver, French hallmark featuring the head of Minerva and a silversmith’s mark with the initials LL; the silversmith’s identity remains to be determined.
