Russian Silver Havdalah Spice Box, 84 Zolotniks – Moscow, 1894 – Judaica
A rare Havdalah spice box made of solid Russian silver, resting on an elegant openwork base and depicting a figure holding a spherical, openable container above his head.
The upper section, hinged and equipped with a clasp, is pierced with small holes that allow the spices used during the Jewish ceremony of Havdalah—marking the end of Shabbat—to be diffused.
The lid is decorated with a six-pointed star, centered with a small dark cabochon. The entire piece rests on an openwork base decorated with scrollwork, ending in four rounded feet.
The object bears several Russian hallmarks:
A.A. / 1894, the hallmark of the Moscow assayer Anatoly Apollonovich Artsybashev, as well as the fineness mark 84 zolotniks, corresponding to silver with a fineness of 875/1000. There is also a master’s mark in Cyrillic script.
Russian work, Moscow, 1894.
A beautiful example of late 19th-century Russian Judaica, complete with its opening mechanism.
In good overall condition, with slight signs of wear consistent with its age.
