Painted And Gilded Wooden Theater De Guignol - Neoclassical Decor - Late 19th / Early 20th Century
Charming carved, painted and partially gilded wood Guignol theater, featuring neoclassical-inspired architecture with arched pediment, foliate brackets and applied medallions.
The entablature bears the inscription "GUIGNOL" on a red background framed by gilded decoration. The scene is framed by a frieze with a woven motif and a painted mantling simulating a theater curtain.
The backdrop is decorated with a lithograph depicting an ancient landscape with a classical temple, this being the Parthenon in Athens, while the lower part features a polychrome printed décor depicting commedia dell'arte characters in a garden.
The Parthenon décor is an interchangeable décor, allowing stage sets to be changed.
The set is accompanied by three glove puppets:
- Guignol in yellow costume,
- Gnafron (or Pierrot depending on interpretation),
- A character with a devil's head / grotesque figure.
French work, probably handcrafted or semi-industrial production intended for children's theater or fairground animation.
Late 19th century - early 20th century (circa 1890-1910).
Painted and gilded wood, glued printed elements, carved wood and fabric puppets.
Overall good condition. Wear and minor chips to polychromy and gilding, normal for a used entertainment item. Puppets with wear and tear.
