Ebe, Painting By T. Conca, Rome, Late 18th Century

Artist: Tommaso Conca , Signè
Hebe, painting by T. Conca (1734–1822), Rome, late 18th century
signed in Greek letters in the upper left corner
His first teachers were his father and his cousin, who taught him Baroque painting techniques. In 1770, Tommaso became a member of the Academy of San Luca, the guild of painters in Rome, which he led as president in 1793. From 1775 to 1782, he worked for Marcantonio Borghese, painting the ceilings of two rooms in the renovated Borghese Gallery, in collaboration with Giovanni Battista Marchetti. In the so-called Sala del Sileno, above a statue of Silenus, he painted several scenes related to that figure, featuring Bacchus and his followers. In the Sala Egizia, he depicted the Nile, Cybele, and other celestial bodies, adorning the spaces between the various scenes with faux Egyptian idols; along the walls, he painted eight scenes related to Egyptian religion and the lives of Mark Antony and Cleopatra.
The painting may date to his later years, a period when he was influenced by A.R. Mengs
