French School Circa 1785-90 Coriolan Goes Into Exile, Neoclassical Painting David Guérin Girodet
French School circa 1785-90
Coriolanus leaves his family to go into exile
Painting, oil on canvas
Unsigned
Painting: 40.5 x 32.5 cm
19th century frame with an attribution to Guérin and a number 27: 45.5 x 37.5 cm
Good condition, old and discreet restorations
Note: this painting is typical of the size of the sketch canvas for the competitions for the Prix de Rome. Two subjects seem to correspond to this painting: in 1786, Coriolanus left his family to go into exile and in 1791, Regulus returned to Carthage. But we are leaning more towards the subject of 1786.
