Superb pair of slightly ivory-tinted white porcelain potpourri jars dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, probably from the Samson factory. In the style of ginger jars known for centuries, they feature a high-relief floral decoration: branches, leaves, and flowers are applied to the jars and stand out in high relief with a very fine quality of execution. The decoration is continuous, giving the impression of leafy and flowering branches around the rim.
The tops of the jars are decorated with melon ribs pierced with holes for fragrance at regular intervals.
These holes are also found in the lids, which are adorned with the same floral designs.
These two potpourri jars are in very good condition; there are a few tiny chips on the leaves or petals, but they are barely noticeable. However, one of the two One pot was pierced and then resealed, while the other is intact.
These two potpourri containers are superb and make a beautiful display.
I have previously encountered a similar model by Samson, but with a smoother, more orientalist, even Japanese-inspired design; however, they remain difficult to find in such excellent condition.
