The present work is a beautiful painting of a Nereid attributed to the circle of William Edward Frost (1810–1877). Nereids are numbered among the nymphs—female divinities who took the form of beautiful young women. They are the nymphs of the sea (specifically the fifty daughters of the old sea god Nereus), and usually are benevolent and playful, taking care with the fate of sailors.

This painting depicts a Nereid standing in waist-deep water, her graceful form and flowing hair characteristic of the traditional depictions of a Nereid. It is a skilfully composed painting that perfectly captures the character and nature of the mythological being. The style and composition show significant similarities to the work of Frost.

William Edward Frost (1810–1877) was an English painter of the Victorian era who built his reputation on painting the nude. A protégé of William Etty, Frost was educated in the schools of the Royal Academy. In 1839 he won the Royal Academy's gold medal for his Prometheus Bound. He was elected an associate member of the Royal Academy in 1846, and a full member in 1870.

Condition report: The canvas is in good tension and appears to have been lined circa 100 years ago. Ares of very fine craquelure throughout. The painting has been cleaned with minor retouching in a few areas. In overall excellent restored condition. The original ornate gilt frame has been refurbished.
