Title: A 17th century Dutch tavern scene with a woman dancing
Date: Circa 1695-1705
Medium: oil on canvas laid onto original panel
Provenance: From a private Devon collection
Various old inscriptions to the verso. One states the painters father Egbert van Heemskerck I (1634-1704) as the artist, but we think the current attribution, given on acquisition, is accurate based on the stylistic elements, although there were distinctive similarities between the two painter's works.
Dimensions: overall size including the frame is 46cm x 39cm x 7cm and the painting measured at 26cm x 19cm
An atmospheric and topically generic late 17th century oil on canvas laid onto what appears to be its original wooden panel depiction of a 17th century Dutch tavern scene with the focal character dressed in a red period costume dancing with another character. The scene is typical of the work of the 17th-18th century painter Egbert van Heemskerck the Younger (1676-1744) who work regularly illustrates the social lives of his contemporary society often in what can be described as a caricaturistic manner.
Egbert van Heemskerck the Younger (1676-1744) received his training by Pieter Fransz de Grebber, however, his works are dominated by the style of his father Egbert van Heemskerck I (1634-1704), who in turn was influenced by Adriaen Brouwer and Heinderick Teniers. In the 1680s he moved to London, where he successfully worked until his death.
Heemskerck and his father, also called Egbert, were both born in Haarlem and came to London, where they both died; they seem to have painted almost identical subjects. Heemskerk senior specialised in low-life scenes set in shops, taverns or meeting houses. He appears to have trained a son as a painter, who was also a singer at Sadler's Wells. Heemskerk junior was a coarse imitator of his father's works, adapting similar compositions with updated costume.
The present work is typical of the work of Heemskerck the Younger. Theatrical in composition and executed with a caricatural style, the painting depicts a tavern scene with a woman dancing - a theme visited repeatedly by Heemskerck the Younger.
The painter's works are well collected and held in private collections Worldwide and in gallery holdings. The record price achieved for work by the painter of similar size is 43,750 USD in 2018.
Condition report: In original condition the painting has been historically cleaned. There is still good tonality. Slightly darkened but privacy painted with this in mind to capture an evening atmosphere the painting has very light abrasion to the paint surface in a few small areas but appears not to have had any intervention as such and this retains its original characteristics. The canvas was we believe originally laid into a wooden panel which appears to be contemporary with the painting. The panel has had recent restoration with treatment for old woodworm as a precaution and some impregnation of resin to stabilise the panels structural integrity in a few peripheral areas. The substrate appears to be stable, the canvas laid evenly, and the paint surface is clean. The frame is believed to be 18th or perhaps very early 19th century. This had had some restoration and had also been treated although no woodwork appears to be present which also suggests it is a later frame. The frame is offered as a gift (see notes below regarding frames).
