The Crucifixion, (xix) Italian School In The 17th Century Style

Artist: (xix) Italian School In The 17th Century Style
(XIX) Italian School in the 17th Century Style

Title: The Crucifixion

Period: Circa 1850-1900

Medium: Oil on canvas

Provenance: From a private London classical art collection

Dimensions: Overall size with the frame is 61cm x 47cm x 5cm and the painting itself measured at 46cm x 42cm

This is a beautifully executed mid to late 19th century Italian School oil on canvas depiction of The Crucifixion in the 17th century Dutch manner work by an artist with a very good understanding of composition, colour and tone.

The dramatic scene shows Mary Magdelene embracing the base of the cross while the Virgin Mary collapses into the arms of Saint John the Evangelist. To the left of the composition a figure in dark robes, presumed to be a more modern such as Saint Vincent de Paul, looks on as the solemn scene unfolds.

The painting is overall in excellent original condition. There have been a few tiny interventions with well blended retouching to a few areas. The work has been cleaned and relacquered and is in unlined condition without any repairs to the verso and with one tiny surface repair to the lower garment of one sitter.

The canvas has good tension and the paint surface is stable with minimal craquelure. The colour tonality is strong. The layer frame has been re-ebonised and is in good clean, presentable condition. The frame is offered as a gift.
