Biography:
William Raymond Dommersen came from a family of famous artists - he was the son of the painter Pieter Cornelis Dommersen (1833-1918) and the nephew of the painter Cornelis Christiaan Dommersen (1842-1928). Dommersen is best known for his marine scenes and landscapes which show influence from Dutch artists such as Jan van Goyen (1596-1656) and Jacob van Ruisdael (1628-1682). He was most active in England and The Netherlands but also visited Italy, France and Belgium.
Dommersen travelled extensively around Europe and England painting marine and town scenes and his work in Venice and Amsterdam is extremely well collected: His works are still very popular and many have been reproduced in print, his originals, not surprisingly, are very much sought after.
Description:
A beautifully composed and extremely atmospheric oil on canvas depiction of the Grand Canal in Venice by the Anglo- Dutch genre painter William Raymond Dommersen (1850 - 1927).
The painting is rich in vibrancy and lovely tonality and is typical of Dommersen's work.
Throughout his career he painted many different views of Venice and the Grand Canal.
The present work depicts a busy grand canal with the Punta della Dogana and Santa Maria della Salute on the right, while on the left is the church of San Giorgio Maggiore. In the foreground are a number of gondola boats.
Dommerson has a significant and established auction record, the highest price achieved for the artist's work at auction being 20,315 euros for A Street in the Jews Quarter, Amsterdam, sold by Christie's Amsterdam in 2003. In 2021 the artist's Montelbaanstoren and Zuiderkerk, Amsterdam sold for GBP 8,125 at Christie's London.
