"Large Bourgeois Portrait, 17th Century... French Art By Hyacinthe Rigaud & Nicolas De Largillierre "
A large and beautiful painting from the 17th or early 18th century, depicting a magnificent portrait of a gentleman whose hair and silken attire are quite typical of a nobleman from the aristocracy during the reign of Louis XIV. The painting is unsigned and has never been examined in person by an expert, but this style of portraiture is found among the great portrait painters of the period, most notably Hyacinthe Rigaud (1659-1743) or Nicolas de Lagillière (1656-1746), to name only the most famous. Note: this is precisely the kind of work that would merit serious investigation to try to identify its author, as it embodies the grand, "very French" style that made the painters of the Royal Academy of Painting so renowned. It should be noted that this canvas has been cleaned and its old varnish removed, giving it a very beautiful appearance. Appearance: A small piece of fabric is visible on the reverse (old restoration) without any real impact on the quality of the work. Canvas size (oval): 77 cm x 66 cm. Frame: 95 cm x 84 cm.
