Rare large Lega mask said to be of grade in turtle shell. Democratic Republic of Congo. Probably from the Shabunda region, it is a grade mask which indicates the high status of the person who possesses it, it is made to be exhibited as a sign of authority during certain ceremonies. The turtle is an animal venerated by the Luba, it is a slow animal which is considered to be wise, it faces dangers in a peaceful way by protecting itself and moreover it lives a long time. These masks are rare, this one is also large in size and has a superb geometric engraving work, which makes it a rather exceptional mask. Beginning of the last century.
