Vintage Navajo Sterling Silver Turquoise Coral Peyote Bird Buckle, Delvin Nelson C1970
A striking vintage Navajo sterling-silver concho belt buckle, attributed to the Native American silversmith Delvin Nelson and dating from circa 1970.
The domed, scalloped buckle is worked in the traditional overlay technique and decorated with two stylised Peyote Birds, also known as Water Birds. Their bodies are formed from vivid turquoise and red coral chip inlay, arranged around a central oval turquoise cabochon, probably Morenci turquoise. The oxidised ground, applied silver ornament and stamped sunburst border create a particularly strong Southwestern design.
The reverse retains its two original copper-coloured fittings for attachment to a leather concho belt. Closely comparable buckles attributed to Delvin Nelson feature the same distinctive combination of Peyote Birds, chip inlay, overlay silverwork and central turquoise stone.
An attractive piece of vintage Native American jewellery and a highly decorative example of 1970s Navajo silverwork.
Good condition.
American, Navajo, circa 1970.
Dimensions: 8.5 × 6 cm.
