Dogon Bronze Sculpture From Mali Depicting Motherhood
Dogon fertility figure, a ceremonial object crafted by blacksmiths using the lost-wax casting technique.
It features a beautiful, thick antique patina known as “excavation patina,” approximately 30 cm tall including its base, dating from the 19th century or earlier.
In good overall condition; note that antique bronzes are of much higher quality than recent craftsmanship, which is often crude and riddled with casting flaws and errors!
The shine in the photos is due to the strong lighting used to show the items as clearly as possible; the objects are slightly darker in reality.
From a very fine collection assembled by expatriates who lived in Africa in the 1950s and 1960s and later passed down through inheritance, and while this isn’t always the case, these cultured individuals took the time to carefully select their pieces on-site; they are all superb and antique, and I have several for sale.
