Large Hampatong post statue, Dayak, Kalimantan, Borneo, Indonesia. Formerly in the collection of Nina Wolmark,assembled in the 1980s, the screen creator of Rahan, Ulysses 31, and other works well known to older generations.
Total height 146 cm, mounted on a base, with a faded patina resulting from long exposure to the elements.
These protective totems were erected near the graves of important members of the community, at crossroads, and at the edges of fields to protect crops.
It depicts a crouching deity with two saurians at its feet, and several rings at the base of the totem.
A very minimalist and raw object, with natural colors that would be a perfect fit for a modern interior.
