Fang Byeri Statue, Guardian Of The Reliquary, Ngumba, Southern Cameroon
Large Fang statue, the byeri guardian of the ancestors’ bones.
This model is typical of the Nguma style, with its dry patina, copper ornamentation, well-defined pointed teeth, well-proportioned body with rounded, muscular forms and bent legs. This model has no stake at the back; its shape—with a prominent buttocks—and weight distribution allow it to sit easily on the reliquary barrel.
Note the round, ball-shaped eyes and the beautiful patina resulting from use and age.
