Pair Of Highly Sexualized Adan Vodou Vodum Statues From Ghana, Curiosities, Colonial Artifacts?
A very interesting pair of Adan statues from Ghana, one depicting a man with a strong erection, the other with a hornbill (their totem bird), and the other with a woman. Coated in white kaolin, as is often the case. The Adan are a small ethnic group in Ghana who practice Voodoo, like their neighbors the Fon. Voodoo is not, as in the Western imagination, black magic; it is a highly ritualistic religion of protection and healing. These statues were therefore likely intended to help a couple conceive, perhaps colonial settlers, judging by the hat, which even appears to be a colonial helmet on the second statue. There is wear and cracks. The larger statue is 29 cm tall, and 31 cm with its base.
