This anthropomorphic mask, carved from a single piece of wood, is oval in shape. The lower two-thirds of the face are highlighted with white kaolin pigments – an area bounded by the eyebrow arches, which meet at a slender nasal ridge, forming a stylised heart.
The openwork eyes and mouth are almond-shaped, whilst the chin area of the mask is adorned with a beard made of plant fibres.
This mask was used in the Bwani initiation rite.
