Pair Of Pyrogene - Germany - Circa 1880
PAIR of PYROGENES
Germany
Circa 1880
Bronze, silver, gold
H.: 14; W.: 6.3 cm
(Missing)
Pair of silver-plated bronze pyrogene, with gilded accessories and base.
One is a monk, possibly depicting Saint Anthony the Great or Saint Benedict of Mursia, whose face is covered by his hood; he holds a Bible in his left hand, a rosary hanging from the cord around his waist; his body is tilted backward to store matches; the base is grid-patterned for striking matches.
The other is a nun, wearing the cornette of the Daughters of Charity—a white fabric headdress worn by the Sisters of Saint Vincent de Paul until the early 1960s; holding a Bible, with a rosary hanging from a cord around her waist, her body leaning backward to store matches; the base is grid-patterned for striking the matches.
