François Maury Country Scene Marseille Provence
François Maury 1933/1861 Marseille, Provencal painter . Oil on mahogany in 19th century baroque frame with brass cartouche , signed lower right . Format 41/33 cm and 47/55 with frame.
Studied at the École des Beaux-Arts de Marseille, where in 1880 he won first prizes in painting and drawing, and the following year the Prix Jules Cantini. He continued his artistic training at the Académie Julian in Paris. l exhibited at the Salon des artistes français, of which he became a member, and at the Salon d'Automne in Paris.
His talent was mainly displayed in landscape and portraiture. He painted the landscapes of his native Provence. He particularly excelled in works with joyful scenes, round women, nymphs and legendary figures, reminiscent of the paintings of Adolphe Monticelli, whom he admired and was greatly influenced by (and who, in my opinion, he surpassed for these romantic scenes). These are his most sought-after paintings, prized by collectors.
Many of his works are on display at the Musée des Beaux-Arts and the Musée Cantini in Marseille.
