Large Dogon Couple Statue "the First" Mali
Large Dogon statue from Mali representing the primordial couple, our Adam and Eve. Made of hard, heavy wood, with a very eroded patina, especially on one side where the woman's arm is missing, it can be assumed that this object was abandoned and collected much later by an explorer. Indeed, in Mali, there were cemeteries of masks and statues, where objects could unfortunately be quickly destroyed by termites, except for those made of hardwood like this one, probably acacia.
Probably from the beginning of the last century or earlier, it is 77 cm high, and 82 cm with its blackened wooden base.
There are losses and wear.
The representation of the couple is also very interesting because it shows the gesture of tenderness and respect from the man towards his partner, who is quite rigid and self-assured, proving that the image of the submissive woman in Africa is not as straightforward as it might seem!
Note that I have to use powerful lighting to get good definition in the photos; reflections and glare on the images do not exist under normal conditions.
