" Tywara Cywara Bambara Mali Cubist Crest Mask Statue"
This is a crest mask used during the calibration ceremonies of one of the Bambara secret societies, the Cywara. It is attached to a rattan cap for dances related to agricultural rites and thus to the idea of fertility, fecundity, and sowing. It represents, in a highly symbolic, almost abstract way, an antelope with its large horns and the sun. Here, it is magnificently rendered, with curves that echo each other with great elegance and finesse—a technical feat considering the delicacy of the sculpture, carved from a single piece of wood. No glue or additions; everything is in negative space and curves, where primitive art becomes modern art! Height approximately 67 cm, and 71 cm including the base. Good overall condition, beautiful patina!
