A rare Malagan dance mask collected on the Tabar Islands in Papua New Guinea. This mask, called "Tatanua," represents a person’s soul and is used in commemorative ceremonies. These relatively lightweight wooden masks are worn during ritual dances. This particular mask was used during a major ceremony held in February 2020 on the island of Tatau. Wood, plant fibers (notably from coconut and pandanus), coconut bark, pigments, and seashells. Sold with a display stand.
