Adouma Mask, Gabon
Stunning large antique Adouma mask from Gabon, height 42 cm, shows signs of wear.
Beautiful polychromy characteristic of this ethnic group in black, brick red, and white; the eyebrow line and the protruding forehead lend a lovely sense of volume to this abstract, cubist composition. It is said that these masks form the basis of modern Western art; Picasso had some in his collection.
These masks are rare on the market and can fetch high prices at auction; see this example here => Gicquello
I buy only French collections—from former expatriates, collector estates, and the like—since nothing has been available in Africa for a long time now. Please feel free to contact me to negotiate the price; that is part of the tradition in the antiques trade, and I have no problem with it at all.
