Object description :

"Charles émile Callande De Champmartin 1797-1883 - Romulus & Remus With The She-wolf"
Very large and magnificent 19th century canvas representing Romulus & Remus, two twin children, whom Roman mythology designates as the founders of Rome: according to legend they were abandoned and then taken in by a wild she-wolf who suckled them... there are many legends surrounding the life of Romulus and Remus, including the one that says that Romulus killed his brother after an argument... Over the centuries, Romulus & Remus have become iconic figures of Rome, most often symbolized by two babies feeding at the breasts of a she-wolf... The work offered here is signed by the painter Charles Émile CALLANDE DE CHAMPMARTIN (1797-1883), an excellent artist to whom the Bénézit devotes an important chapter and whose biography can be read on the Wikipedia site: originally from Bourges, he was a close friend of the famous painter Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863) whose portrait he painted, preserved at the Carnavalet Museum (Paris). Note: the Louvre Museum has several works by this artist, including a slightly different canvas on the same theme of "Romulus & Remus" ... the Wikipedia site and the Bénézit publish the list of museums and buildings that preserve his works, among which: the Calvet Museum in Avignon, the Saint-Pierre Saint-Paul church in Courbevoie, the Magnin Museum in Dijon, the Louviers Museum, the Victor Hugo Museum (Paris), the Carnavalet Museum (Paris), the Hébre Museum in Rochefort, the Museum of Fine Arts in Rouen, the Montpellier Museum, the Nîmes Museum, the National Museum of the Château de Versailles, the Art Institute of Chicago (USA) ... - ask me for other pictures if necessary - Canvas size: 125 cm x 88 cm Delivery & shipping: the canvas is too large for standard shipping... Please contact me to define the delivery terms which will be done by carrier (different cost depending on the address) of the recipient)...possibilities of being delivered by me in the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes & PACA region..
