"Carlo Jean-jacques 1943-1990 - Bathing Scene In Haiti"
Large and interesting painting from the 70s which represents a luminous bathing scene in a village in Haiti...The work is signed by the Haitian painter Carlo Jean-Jacques (1943-1990) an excellent artist who died prematurely, victim of AIDS at the age of 47: he lived through periods of wandering and bohemianism quite worthy of a cursed painter. Since his death his works are more and more sought after and today some galleries in New York (visible on the web) do not hesitate to offer his paintings between 3000 euros & 8000 euros ... Haitian art since Jean-Michel Basquiat: he is exactly the kind of artist to collect "without breaking the bank" and who can prove to be an excellent investment, in addition to being a beautiful acquisition in a collection: indeed, for a long time Haitian painting was considered with a certain condescension by the art world, too often perceived from the angle of Naïve and Popular Art ... then came the American painter of Haitian origin Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) a self-taught genius (also gone too soon) but who literally changed our way of perceiving popular and urban art ... Carlo Jean-Jacques will first follow the courses of the ABC school in Paris, before joining in Port-au-Prince in 1963 the studio of the Haitian painter Joseph Jacob... Then suddenly in 1966 he broke with everyone and left alone for three years for a life of bohemia and misery. In 1969, he presented a work at the Galerie Monnin which accepted and exhibited it. It was then for him a slow return to a more normal life... Throughout his life the artist was upset by the poverty of the slums that he knew too well since his years of wandering: from then on, he used his art to bear witness to the beauty and dignity that exist among people of modest means...
