Object description :

"Grand & Beautiful Landscape Of 19th Century Italy - Nero's Arch At Dusk - Bénouville & Corot "
Large & beautiful 19th century painting which represents a twilight landscape in Italy which is located at the Arch of Nero near Tivoli ... The painting is not signed but bears on its frame an engraved label which attributes it to Jean-Baptiste C Corot / cliché detail: regarding Corot, it is appropriate to be frank, without a signature obtaining a certificate will be problematic, unless serious investigations are carried out which would allow providing evidence of attribution ... First Observations: it is indeed the Arch of Nero around 1840-1850 since the English landscaper Thomas Cole painted this same place in 1846 (visible on the web) at the time when the arch was crossed by a simple path for shepherds. After 1850 the arch was fitted with a road as evidenced by a painting by Louise Sarazin de Belmont made in 1853 ... Stamp Muller-fils in Paris: the dating is important especially as it is confirmed by the back of the panel which bears the stamp "Muller Fils" active in Paris between 1842 & 1854 ... this allows us to narrow down the searches to French painters who stayed in Rome at that time: in the 19th century, it was already necessary to have certain means to buy painting materials and then to travel and stay in Italy ... This most often concerned wealthy artists, having won the Prix de Rome ... The search carried out from the web, targeting the style, the period and the place, in particular "Rome Tivoli 1840-1850", allows us to retain two French painters in particular: first of all Jean-Baptiste Corot (1796-1875) but also the painter Jean-Achille de Benouville (1815-1891) who joined Corot in Rome in 1843 where the two artists shared the same studio...note: Corot appears objectively as the "best suspect" because he is an artist who achieved recognition and glory especially after 1850 in a "Barbizon" style quite different from his first Italian manner: see his landscape of 1486 entitled environs de Naples ...at the 1842 salon the jury will refuse 4 of Corot's canvases out of the five proposed, which attests that he did not yet have the importance that will be shown to him after 1850...- note that the woman who crosses his landscape of the Landes in 1872 is in exactly the same posture as in the work proposed here / last shots: this detail is quite disturbing because if Corot painted his landscapes on the motif, on the other hand his characters were added after the fact... 30 years separate these two paintings and nevertheless the similarity is there / notice to research enthusiasts ..Panel size: 49 cm x 37.5 cmFrame (accidents): 62 cm x 54 cm - ask me for other photos if necessary -
