Pewter tankard, flared truncated cone shape with a domed top lid and caryatid handle. It is decorated in relief, for the most part, with three cartouches captioned: PATIENTIA, SOLERTIA, NON VI. (Patience is the reason for strength). These three allegories are variants of the medallions borrowed from the dish called MARS and symbolize AFRICA, EUROPE and ASIA, they alternate with compositions of flowers and fruits, motifs imitating cut leather, arabesques, grotesque masks and cherubs.
Height: 17.3 cm.
According to François BRIOT, 19th century
Very good condition.
To illustrate the variants of configuration of the allegories mentioned above, note for example that in the NONVI medallion of the present tankard, strength is represented by a lion while the medallion of the MARS dish represents a dromedary in the allegory of ASIA.

Excerpt from my tutorial available on the site mentioned above :
The Renaissance was the "golden age" of pewter and began with the creations of François BRIOT in France (1560 – 1616) and Caspar ENDERLEIN in Germany (1586 – 1633), and their followers. Their works are called "Edelzinn", a German word meaning "noble pewter" and are characterized by very fine relief decorations that are largely inspired by the themes developed by the great ornamentalists of the time. The themes developed there are most often allegorical, religious or mythological: Temperance, Faith, Hope and Charity, War and Peace, Abundance, the four Elements, the four Seasons, the four Continents, the seven Liberal Arts… These creations were popular until the middle of the 18th century, mainly in Lyon, Nuremberg, Strasbourg and some Swiss centers…
These decorations are of a quite remarkable finesse which implies on the one hand, molds of an exceptional quality of chasing (François BRIOT was also a medalist before being a founder) and on the other hand, a total mastery of the casting techniques, because these basins, ewers and other “patens” were not retouched with a chisel after leaving the mold; they remained “raw from the foundry”. The rare period productions that appear on the market are generally sold for between €2,000 and €6,000 depending on their state of conservation and the presence of marks allowing them to be attributed to a center or even a workshop.
