**************

Pewter EWER known as the “Helmet of Mars,” with a flared, undulating neck and a pinched spout; the body is adorned with a wide band at the top and a frieze of tongues at the base. It rests on a circular pedestal with a knot and a fluted frieze and is fitted with a handle featuring a draped crook, a step, and a volute.
Hallmark: Crowned FF / 1709 / TOL (for Tolosa, the city’s former name)
Height: 28.9 cm
TOULOUSE, first half of the 18th century

In good condition; minor repairs due to wear are noted at the handle attachments and the knot, as well as a filling at the site of one of the tongues. The interior is oxidized.
In Toulouse, as in many other centers of the kingdom, the regulations established by Louis XIV in 1691 regarding hallmarks were not strictly enforced, and that is even an understatement; the only two hallmarks recorded to date are those from 1691 and 1709, the latter of which was thus used without being updated for much of the 18th century; it therefore does not allow for the precise dating of objects bearing these hallmarks.
