Pair of pewter ewers known as “Mars’ helmet” ewers, featuring an S-shaped neck with a beautifully shaped spout, a dynamic, molded base topped with a knot; they feature a handle with a draped crook and long gadroons. The base is decorated with a frieze of tongues in relief.
Hallmark: Crowned FF / 1709 / TOL (for Tolosa, the city’s former name).
Height: 28.3 cm.
TOULOUSE, First half of the 18th century
A superb and rare Type III model featuring a variant of the Type II handle (§ René Richard: “Potiers d’étain de l’ancien Languedoc et du Roussillon”), presented here, quite exceptionally, as a pair.
This is one of the finest French examples of this type of object, perfectly representative of the typology of ewers that emerged in the second half of the 17th century, a style also adopted by silversmiths, earthenware makers, and glassmakers.Note on hallmarks:In Toulouse, as in many cities throughout the Kingdom, Louis XIV’s edict establishing the hallmark in 1691 was not strictly enforced, and for this center, only the dates 1691 and 1709 are known. The latter hallmark was used for many years without being updated and therefore does not allow for precise dating of the objects bearing it.
