Very rare square pewter SUNDIAL with rounded corners; the hours are marked in Arabic numerals and slightly raised; it bears the following inscription in cursive script: C (for dial) HORIZONTAL FOR USE IN PROVENCE, CONTAT, LANGUEDOC, DAUPH(iné) BY BROTHER RIGAUD MINIME.
Dimensions: 12.5 x 12 cm.
Height of the gnomon: 3.9 cm
SOUTHEAST FRANCE, second half of the 17th or early 18th century.

In very good condition, with a dark patina.
A very rare object among pewter artifacts; this is only my sixth such find in nearly half a century...
Without biographical information on the gnomonist, the dating range cannot be narrowed much further, as research has yielded no results.

A Bit of History:
Under the Ancien Régime, the brothers and fathers of the Order of the Minims included brilliant mathematicians, astronomers, and physicists. The construction of sundials required a solid knowledge of geometry and astronomy. The reference here is to the gnomonist of this sundial: Brother RIGAUD, a member of the Order of the Minims. It was common for these learned monks to design sundials for the facades of their own monasteries, parish churches, or the estates of prominent figures in their region.
