Object description :

"Very Rare Large Pewter Dish - Bergues, 18th Century"

Exceptional very LARGE OBLONG DISH in pewter with a scalloped edge and richly molded with shells and “rocaille” motifs. Hallmarked :
“Hall Mark” type of Pierre Balthazar CHOCQUEEL received master around 1745, four small hallmarks affixed to the wing:
1°- rampant lion
2°- initials P.B.C
3°- marine anchor
4°- volatile
Dimensions: 62 x 46.5 cm
Weight: 4.4 kg
BERGUES, Mid-18th century

In very good condition, a small star-shaped crack has been repaired on the wing and the reverse has a dark patina marbled with light areas resulting from prolonged contact with a suspension accessory.
Extremely rare due to the decoration of the rim, the dimension never encountered to date for this shape, the quality of finish and its absence from specialized literature.
This dish was obtained by forging from a large tin wheel shaped with a hammer to form the bowl.
Some very discreet traces of this hammering attest to this difficult technique. Finally, note that the peripheral molding was cast separately and added by welding to the rim of the dish after cutting to the template of the latter. These added moldings are rare in French production, however, there are a few examples in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany.
