Large Pewter Cimarre - Joinville (champagne), Early 18th Century
Artist: Maître N. L. R
Shipping is free for mainland France via La Poste or Mondial Relay
**************
Large pewter CIMARRE in baluster shape with high foot, molded flared throat, undulating lid with top and thumb rest with two seeds; it is fitted with a fixed handle and a swinging bracket handle with cherub head attachments.
Hallmarks on the lid and exterior base:
1° - Control mark: crowned C /IONVIL / 1717.
2° - Unidentified maker's mark: crowned fleur-de-lis / two stars / NRL.
Height: 30 cm.
JOINVILLE, Between 1717 and 1721.
The immediately later recorded control mark is that of 1721 and therefore allows us to limit the dating.
This 1717 control mark has two engraving errors in its die: the C (meaning common tin) has been reversed and the V of Joinville is a U.
This maker with the initials NRL has eluded our attempts at identification for several decades...
Very good condition, however, a slight fragility at the bottom of the rim where it has been repeatedly touched by the swinging handle is noted.
These cimarres were ceremonial vessels intended for serving wine at the table; they were made almost exclusively in Champagne and to a lesser extent in Franche-Comté.
