Pewter PITCHER with a flared shoulder, plinth base, straight-sided cup, and S-shaped thumbhole with a molded crest and a curving tab.
Hallmark: Crowned C / MELVN / 1691.
Hallmark of Louis Philippe MALET, who became a master silversmith before 1750: Crowned reptile / L.P.M.
Height: 20.6 cm.
MELUN, mid-18th century

Rare provenance in very good condition, bright. Very few examples from this provenance are known.
In many centers, the 1691 hallmark was not updated annually as required by Louis XIV’s edict; in MELUN, the 1691 hallmark was used throughout nearly the entire 18th century and therefore cannot, on its own, be used to date objects with precision.
