ROUEN SCHOOL
Marcel COUCHAUX (1877–1939)

Oil on canvas: STILL LIFE WITH ROUGET.
Signed lower right.
Frame dimensions: 45 x 88 cm.

This work, quite atypical of the artist’s oeuvre, is in very good condition, on its original canvas, presented in a luxurious carved and patinated wooden frame by Maison GAULT.
The work was recently cleaned and re-varnished by the ROLLIN Gallery in Rouen.

Very early on, Marcel Couchaux was noticed by the painters of the Rouen School: DELATTRE, HENOQUE, SUZANNE, LOUVRIER, DUMONT, among others…
In 1906, G. Dubosc, a renowned Rouen-based art critic of the time, said of him: His palette, that of a refined colorist, delights above all in gray harmonies that remain colorful, and his skillful, knitted-like brushwork—juxtaposing and intertwining loops—evokes, as is the case here with even greater force, LE SIDANER’s “touch.”
At age 32, Marcel Couchaux was inducted into the Rouen Museum.
In 1914, he exhibited at the “Société Normande de Peinture Moderne” alongside HODE, DUMONT, DUFY, UTRILLO, and VLAMINK.
He went on to exhibit successfully with various art societies until 1934.
The canvas presented here depicts a still life—a subject very rarely tackled by this painter—featuring a highly textured paint application, described at the time as “knitted.” It most likely dates from his early period, during which he painted with a brush before the “palette knife” took on increasing importance during his second period, dated by François LESPINASSE as 1910 to 1925.

This oil on canvas was sold for 26,400 FRF on April 26, 199 by Maître DENESLE, auctioneer in ROUEN 2, Lot No. 151 in the catalog (see screenshot taken from the ARTPRICE website)
Bibliography: “L’Ecole de Rouen” by François LESPINASSE, published by Fernandez Frères, 1980.
