Pewter PITCHER, with a shouldered shape, a quarter-round base and bowl, and a thumb rest with two knobs, decorated with a broad molded band in the middle of the neck. Flat handle
Worn hallmark of Joseph BALMET: a rampant lion facing left holding a sword / initials I.B. The 8th image shows this hallmark; the 9th shows the same hallmark—nearly complete—as previously recorded on a master’s plate.
Height: 21.4 cm.
Capacity at the rim: 0.894 liters, corresponding precisely to the Rodez standard
ESPALION (Languedoc), mid-18th century

In very good condition with a natural, semi-glossy patina.
To describe this pitcher—of which only a few examples are known—as “extremely rare” is an understatement. Only two examples are reproduced in the recent book by my colleague Philippe Boucaud titled “Pewter and Masters of Béarn, Gascony, Guyenne, and Rouergue—1600–1900.” The rest of the specialized literature is silent on the production of pitchers from this center.
The hallmark motifs are borrowed from the city’s coat of arms, which is “Or, a lion gules holding in its right paw a high sword of the same.”
Finally, it should be noted that these pitchers served as the official wine measures under the Ancien Régime. The capacity of those used in inns, taverns, etc., had to be periodically inspected by royal or ecclesiastical authorities to ensure “fair measure” for the consumer
