Pewter Wine Pitcher - Strasbourg, 18th Century
Artist: Jean 1er Isenheim
Free shipping within mainland France via La Poste or Mondial Relay
**************
Pewter pitcher with a truncated conical shape, flared base, and S-shaped thumb rest lid with a molded crest. It is decorated with a central band and pairs of turned fillets. A measuring center and an internal gauging cone indicate the level served to the consumer.
Hallmark with the city's coat of arms.
Hallmark of Jean I ISENHEIM, received as a master around 1760.
Rosette countermark on the inner base.
STRASBOURG, Last third of the 18th century.
In very good condition.
The recent archival discovery of a Jean II compels us to clarify the period of activity of Jean I, who was mentioned as having received as a master around 1784.
It should be noted here that at that time Alsace was not part of the Kingdom of France, which explains the configuration of the control hallmark, which does not conform to the edict of Louis XIV.
Bibliography:
"Strasbourg Pewter" by Adolph Riff;
"Pewter Pitchers" by Charles Boucaud
