**************

Large ROUND pewter platter with a wide, plain rim, known as "cardinal style", decorated with an armorial-type motif with a flaming and arrowed center, surmounted by the initials IS, within a vegetal wreath.
Fragmentary hallmark showing only the date 1682. This element alone does not allow for geographical restriction of its origin. Diameter: 40.9 cm
FRANCE, Late 17th or very early 18th century.

In good condition, free from restoration or deformation, numerous knife marks are noted.
Beautiful hammered facets are visible on the reverse, evidence of this technique which consisted of compressing the metal molecules to give it increased rigidity.
This wide-winged form is called "Cardinal" due to its Italian origin, imported by Cardinal Mazarin (Mazarini).
Bibliography: "La poterie d'étain en France" by Roger Verdier.
