Artisanal Wooden Callback. Southeastern France. 19th Century.
Entirely hand-crafted, the rappe is made of numerous pieces of wood that can be assembled without tools and easily dismantled, probably for transport. The wood is hard and heavy. The abrasive cylinder is made from a wooden log covered with a perforated metal sheet. It's a machine designed for rapping small things, as the feed hole is small. There are large wooden screws for adjustment. We don't know what was rapped, but where it came from (Alpes Maritimes) might help determine which seeds were to be ground. We thought of pine nuts, chickpeas, carob beans, almonds... We know of no other examples of such a machine. Dimensions: 52x53x32cm. 68cm including crank. The gear is missing teeth and an adjusting screw.
