Pewter Wine Pitcher- Lyon, XVII Th C.
Artist: Laurent Morant
Large pewter wine pitcher, truncated cone-shaped, with a cylindrical base and a high quarter-round goblet, fitted with a lid with a tasseled thumbscrew.
Incompletely legible (bruised) hallmark of Laurent MORANT, received master around 1664: L.(M) / crowned /…/.
It is quite common to encounter hallmarks containing royal symbols, crossed out, bruised or burned during the revolutionary era. Here the crown!
Height: 27.2 cm.
Gauge at the bottom of the goblet / 2.10 liters
Gauge flush: 2.32 liters
The official gauge was the "pot lyonnais": 2.118 liters LYON,
LYON, Second half of the 17th century
In Lyon the first vintage of the control is that of 1674 and the second is that instituted by Louis XIV in 1691.
The absence of control on this pitcher suggests that it may have been manufactured between 1664 and 1691.
These pitchers were the wine measures of the Ancien Régime and this is the very rare largest capacity for this center measuring the "Pot".
All the pieces encountered in recent decades measured the half-pot.
Conservation: In very good condition, internal oxidation and calcareous concretions are however reported
