TOULOUSE, 18th century
In very good condition and of rare provenance. The design of pitchers from this workshop, with their raised, flat-topped lids, is clearly of medieval inspiration, a style frequently seen in the 16th and 17th centuries and, exceptionally, in the 18th century
In Toulouse, the royal edict of 1691 regulating quality control was not enforced, and this hallmark from 1709 was never updated and remained in use for much of the century. It therefore does not allow for the precise dating of objects bearing it.
I would like to note in passing that these “pichetrs” were the wine measures used during the Ancien Régime. The capacity of those used in public places—taverns and various drinking establishments—had to be verified by inspectors appointed by royal or ecclesiastical authorities.
