******************
Large and beautiful pewter JUG called "Dourne", ovoid in shape with quarter-round foot, cylindrical throat, curved tubular spillway, hinged lid and semi-circular molded vertical handle.
Hallmark of Jean Antoine BLAN received master before 1772: volatile / JAB / FIN.
Height: 34.2 cm.
LYON, End of the 18th century
In very good condition, made of beautiful solid cast iron and bearing an original hallmark.
These jugs have often been attributed to the exclusive service of oil, but in nearly 50 years of frequenting pewter, I have never noticed either olfactory or visually oily deposits at the bottom of these objects... I therefore think that the function attributed to them was multiple: milk, wine, water... and possibly oil...
