"Rare Engraving Of The Island Of Narmoustier (island Of Noirmoutier) - Ep. 17th"
RARE Chisel engraving on steel, by Christophe TASSIN, born in the early 1600s and died in 1660, in France, also known as Nicolas Tassin, Christophe Nicolas Tassin or Christophe Le Tassin, French cartographer, known for his atlas of France, from Spain, Germany and Switzerland. Most of his work was published in Paris from 1633 to 1635. The island of Noirmoutier is a French island in the Bay of Biscay located in the department of Vendée. It is connected to the continent by a submersible causeway called the Passage du Gois and, since 1971, by a bridge. It is made up of four municipalities — Noirmoutier-en-l'Île, Barbâtre, L'Épine and La Guérinière — grouped into the community of municipalities of Île-de-Noirmoutier. Noirmoutier was formerly written Noirmoutiers. The Poitevin-Saintongeais name of the island is Nérmoutàe (written as Nermoster in texts from the 13th century). These names come from the Latin in + Herio Monasterio, that is to say: "at the monastery of Herus", Herus being the Latin name of the northern part of the island (today the "island of Her" ). A charter from the Coudrie cartulary, dated 1150, translates this toponym into Latin nigrum monasterium (black monastery). However, the etymology which would associate the color "black" with the term "moutier" (designating a monastery) is strictly of popular origin, probably resulting from the phonetic transformation of Herio Monasterio into Hoir Moustier ("the monastery of Hoir », that is to say from Herus), which evolved, through the euphonic prosthesis of the letter n, into Ner-Monster, then Noir Moustier and Noirmoutier.
