ANONYMOUS
Representation of a Mediterranean-type boat, beached, probably used for fishing or coastal trading. The hull, with its full, rounded forms, features a raised stem and stern, traditional features of southern Europe. The rig consists of a single mast carrying a lateen sail, with a long, sloping antenna, typical of Mediterranean boats. This type of sail, particularly well-suited to coastal winds, was widely used in southern Italy, notably in the Naples region. The bow of the boat is extended by a small bowsprit, while the overall scene is enlivened by a few figures on the shore.
By its typology and treatment, this craft is similar to Neapolitan barques known as "gozzo", used for fishing and small coastal transports.
