British Tank Crewman's Helmet From World War I
Protective mask (“splatter mask”) for British tank crews during World War I. It consists of a stamped steel frame, covered with fawn-colored leather on the outside and lined with padded chamois leather on the inside. It features attached slit-eye openings, as well as a protective chainmail curtain suspended from its lower edge. The mask was secured to the wearer’s head with cotton straps, remnants of which still remain. The stitches connecting the outer leather to the chamois leather lining are partially come undone, revealing the manufacturer’s mark: “Dury’s Sheffield.” An extremely rare and iconic piece of headgear from the Great War.
