Polychrome Wooden Sculpture Of The Virgin And Child – Iberian Work – 18th Century
An important religious sculpture carved from wood and painted in polychrome, depicting the Virgin and Child, dating from the 18th century, likely from the Spanish or Portuguese school.
The Virgin Mary is depicted seated, holding the Infant Jesus on her left knee. She is dressed in a long gown adorned with polychrome floral motifs, cinched at the waist, and wrapped in a loose-fitting blue cloak with gold trim. A green-toned veil frames her face, whose gentle and serene expression contrasts with the lively pose of the Child, depicted with his arm raised in a gesture of blessing.
The work stands out for the richness of its polychromy, combining shades of blue, green, red, and ochre, as well as for the delicate rendering of the faces and drapery.
This work exemplifies the tradition of 18th-century Iberian religious sculpture, characterized by expressive iconography and particularly meticulous decorative polychromy.
