Pair Of Wall-mounted Carved Wooden Sconces In The Form Of Fragmentary Ionic Capitals, Antique
Pair of antique carved wooden architectural decorative elements, forming two fragments of Ionic capitals, probably originating from an interior decorative scheme (boiseries, overdoor, library?).
18th century – early 19th century
Dimensions :
Bottom length : 23 cm
Top length :18 cm
Height : 8,5 cm
Each element features a carved Ionic volute framing a central frieze decorated with stylised egg-and-dart and bead motifs.
The reverse, left in its original rough state, reveals an early assembled construction with visible tool marks, nails and mortise joints, confirming an original architectural function rather than a decorative object conceived ex nihilo.
The surface retains a rich aged patina with remnants of polychromy and preparatory layers (cream, grey, ochre tones and reddish traces), bearing witness to successive decorative campaigns over time.
Wear, losses and irregularities fully contribute to the authenticity and charm of the ensemble.
Good overall condition for early architectural elements.
Wear, small losses, cracks and alterations consistent with age.
