Fragment Of A Terracotta Mask Inspired By Classical Antiquity.
Terracotta Mask Fragment
Undetermined period, 19th century or earlier
Height: 17 cm
In overall good condition, with a visible restoration/mounting element on the reverse only. Wear, minor losses, and surface irregularities are present and contribute to the decorative character and authenticity of the piece.
This fragment represents the head of an elderly man, whose features have been deliberately rendered with expressive emphasis: an intense gaze, arched eyebrows, a long stylized beard, and a slightly open mouth. The surface retains a beautiful nuanced brown patina that enhances the sculptural modeling and relief.
The piece can be viewed in Issy-les-Moulineaux, near Paris.
