Francisque-Edouard Bertier (1840–1925) was born in Paris; he was a student of BOUGUEREAU and CABANEL, and he painted numerous portraits of English and American high society. Several of his works are housed in international museums and institutions, such as the National Trust of Scotland, the National Gallery, the Mulhouse Museum, and Harvard University... This portrait of an elegant man depicts a friend of the painter, who was 28 years old at the time.
